Why a remixed Short needs a dependency record
Attribution makes the creative relationship visible, but it does not make the source permanent.
YouTube exposes remix relationships through different interfaces. Audio remix attribution can be reached through the sound page, while visual remix attribution appears in the Shorts player. YouTube also allows content that has already been remixed to become part of a later remix chain. Those paths are useful for discovery, but they mean a description-only audit can miss an important source relationship. The operational risk is straightforward: your published asset can rely on an upstream asset controlled by somebody else. The source owner may delete the video, restrict remixing, or edit the source. YouTube says affected audio remixes and video remixes do not necessarily receive the same treatment. A creator therefore needs to know both which source was used and how it was used.
The register is not a legal-rights determination. Record the channel displayed by YouTube as the source channel, but do not automatically label that uploader as the underlying rights owner. YouTube’s upload guidance says uploaders must own the rights or have the necessary licenses, and monetizing creators need the required commercial rights to their audio and visual elements. Fields to include in the dependency register
The register must identify the published asset, its upstream sources, its exposure, and the prepared response.
Use one row per Short rather than one row per campaign. A campaign-level note such as “uses remixed audio” cannot tell you which upload is exposed, whether a clean master exists, or who owns the replacement. If several Shorts use the same source, connect those rows through a shared dependency ID.
Recommended identity fields are: internal Short ID; title; YouTube URL and video ID; status; planned or actual publication date; campaign or series; editor; and current owner. Recommended dependency fields are: source-video URL and ID; displayed source channel, handle, and channel ID when available; known rights contact; remix type; sampled segment; sound-page URL; audio title and artist as displayed; attribution route; upstream remix; and date captured.
Add operational fields for the last availability check, check result, risk level, notification date, platform deadline, local-master location, clean-render location, backup audio, replacement visuals, replacement owner, reviewer, planned response, replacement Short ID, and final disposition. Use controlled statuses so the register can be filtered. Useful states include Monitoring, Backup complete, Action required, Replacement in production, Replacement approved, Republished, Retired, and No action required.
Do not use a single generic “source” field. A Short can combine visuals from one source with music, voice-over, or another sound added separately. YouTube says creators using its personalized Create feed can add music or voice-over after generating a remix. Classify the remix before choosing a contingency
The replacement plan should correspond to the element that can be changed or removed.
Record whether the Short uses Sound, Cut, Green Screen, Collab, a YouTube Create feed remix, or a remix of a remix. YouTube lists Sound, Cut, Green Screen, and Collab among its remix options. Its documentation also says music-video Cut can use a one-to-five-second audiovisual segment, while Sound can use up to 90 seconds of audio, subject to partner-specific limits. For Sound, preserve a clean visual master and choose an approved alternate soundtrack before publication. For Cut, retain the surrounding edit and prepare original or appropriately cleared footage that can replace the sampled sequence. For Green Screen, store your foreground recording independently and create a source-independent background option. For Collab, retain your side of the composition and a layout that works without the source panel.
For a YouTube Create feed remix, preserve the exported file, prompt or production notes, references you are permitted to retain, captions, voice-over, approval record, and replacement concept. YouTube says Create-feed remixes link to the original content, automatically disclose use of AI for videos generated with that remix feature, and are deleted if the original is removed or restricted. For a remix of a remix, record each identifiable upstream relationship. Do not assume the immediately visible remix is the entire chain. If you cannot verify an upstream source, mark it Unknown rather than guessing. That unresolved field should raise the review priority.

Capture the attribution path immediately after publication
Verify the live viewer experience while the source relationship is easy to inspect.
Publication is the best point to create the dependency record because the editor, source choice, project files, and approval context are still available. Assign this task as part of publishing rather than leaving it for a later archive project.
Take screenshots for operational reference, but do not treat a screenshot as permission to reuse material after access or remix eligibility changes. It documents what your team observed and when. Store it beside the final export and dependency row.

Build the backup before a source warning arrives
Preserve editable, source-independent materials at approval—not only the uploaded Short.
YouTube says it emails remixing creators when certain source changes affect their Shorts. In the documented audio-remix case, the creator may download the Short without the remixed audio before the scheduled deletion and upload it again with different audio. That is a useful response route, but it should not be the only backup. The relevant consequences and response window appear in YouTube’s remix guidance.
Keep the editable project, a clean visual render, voice-over and dialogue stems, captions, on-screen copy, cover assets, source notes, original title and description, publication metadata, attribution screenshot, and an approved alternate soundtrack. For a visually dependent remix, also preserve your independently created footage and a replacement storyboard or shot list.
YouTube generally lets creators download MP4 files of videos they uploaded, but its help documentation lists circumstances in which downloads may be unavailable, including some videos that use pre-approved audio. Use a consistent naming pattern such as Series_ShortID_Element_Version_Status_Date. Run recurring source-availability checks
Set check frequency by business importance and replacement difficulty, then perform an immediate review after any platform notice.
A practical starting cadence is weekly for current launches or difficult-to-replace sources, monthly for important evergreen Shorts, and quarterly for low-priority archived material. These intervals are workflow recommendations, not YouTube requirements. Adjust them according to publishing volume, source volatility, and the time needed to produce a replacement.
A manual review should confirm that the source URL opens, the expected source title and channel remain visible, the dependent Short is still public and audible, and its attribution still leads to the expected source. Check whether the source or Short has become private, unavailable, Unlisted, muted, or otherwise changed. Record the observed result and date rather than simply checking a box.

Execute the correct plan when a dependency changes
Treat the notification or failed check as a controlled incident affecting a known set of assets.
For affected audio, mark the record Action required, capture the email date, record YouTube’s scheduled deletion date, retrieve the clean visual master, apply approved replacement audio, review timing and captions, and publish the replacement. Cross-reference the old and new Short IDs and update calendars or other links. YouTube says an affected audio remix may be muted, made Unlisted, and scheduled for deletion in 30 days. For affected video, identify every Short sharing the dependency, stop unpublished derivatives, and determine whether the source was deleted, restricted, blurred, or trimmed. Replace the sampled material with original or appropriately cleared footage, then check whether the concept still communicates the intended idea.
